The terrifying genocide which took place in Rwanda in 1994 resulted in the death of almost 1 million people. Many entire families were killed.
Often only 1 or 2 children survived, having watched as their loved ones were slaughtered. Those who escaped death faced months "on the run" in the forests. Many refugee children had nothing but straw and sticks for shelter.
In close co-operation with the Rwandan government, many children from the home are reintegrated into the homes of family members or foster parents.
The children at Fred Nkunda receive schooling at Nursery School, Primary School and Secondary School level and are also encouraged to take part in sporting activities.
