Ronel Pasmana (6mths) parents live in the village of Dulangan 11 on Mindoro Island, in the Philippines. They have two other children and have to travel one hour for medical attention. Each year, 20 street children pull themselves out of destitution and make it on to one of CWSN’s pioneering 3-year technical training schemes in Nepal. Here, everyone is equal. Even girls train to be plumbers and electricians. But once they graduate, they’re on their own. The one thing they need to take the next step, to get a job or start their own business, is their own toolbox filled with the tools of their trade. A toolbox contains 15 items, the most essential and expensive of which is a drill, plus pliers, screwdrivers, spirit level, multi meter, hacksaw, wire-stripper and the toolbox itself. Price $144.00 Quantity           Fabric to Clothe a sick child in Nepal   When impoverished mothers come from the villages with their sick children to CWSN’s Asha Clinic in Pokhara (a free primary healthcare service for all children), they may wait anxiously for hours or days while their child is treated. The Asha team have come up with a brilliant idea. Using the clinic’s sewing machine and locally made woven cloth, mothers are taught to make clothes for their children. The result? Women are distracted from their worries, they learn a useful trade, the child gets new clothes to protect it from the harsh winter, and local cloth-makers benefit. Providing mosquito nets for a family and taking them through a Malaria workship is the most effective method of significantly reducing the number of children needlessly dying at the hands of malaria in Guludo, Mozambique were the infant mortality rate is 30%. Food has to be bought daily and eaten up or thrown out. In Pokhara, the summer months are hot and Uma the cow’s fresh milk quickly goes off. Fresh vegetables are also relatively expensive, and it’s uneconomical and wasteful when food can’t be bought in bulk or kept. A fridge would make an enormous difference to the running of the SOS Bahini girls’ family units where young girls have been rescued from abuse, child prostitution, being trafficked, homelessness, and HIV/AIDS. Price $300.00 Quantity           STREET KID’S WINTER KIT, Nepal   Some 150 street children regularly come to CWSN’s innovative Contact Centre for refuge, training, a wash and a square meal at the Kitchen Club. But the night shelter overflows in the cold winter months and some bunk down on the street or at the scrap centre after a day’s rag-picking. The essential Winter Kit includes a mattress, quilt, trousers, socks, sweater and jacket. The scrap centre or a local shopkeeper would store the mattresses and quilts during the day.
