Climate Change And Partnerships Working To Change the Course of History
As you know, I have always believed that we really can change the course of history if we join hands in partnership. Facing a future with the growing effects of Climate Change, the urgency to be agents of transformation is even more relevant.
Together with Angels that come from all walks of life, we continue to develop The Tsavo Project – a pilot model of community transformation in Kenya. As partners from around the world, we connect with local women in the Itinyi Valley, to support them in the challenges they face in an environment that is often hostile to human life. If we can turn things around in Tsavo, we will have keys to do that anywhere….
Water in the Desert – A Miracle or Partners Working Together?
Robert Walters is a global recruitment company. As a Corporate Angel Partner, they are one of our major donors, and have funded much of the infrastructure, buildings and small business development needed for us to make our regenerative farm project successful.
Each year they reward eight staff members by sending them on a week-long volunteer visit to the Tsavo Project. While with us, they have built trenches, poultry houses, the foundation of a classroom and even helped dig a very deep rainwater catchment dam.
Due to the crisis of Covid-19, none of us could travel to Kenya. Creative members of Robert Walters came up with a plan to invite their 4,000 staff around the world to walk or run the cumulative distance that their members would have travelled to reach the Tsavo Project – with the promise that Head Office would match-fund everything that was raised.
So in July, hundreds of Robert Walters staff walked and ran, raising £38,000 for Global Angels. With the severe water crisis in Kenya (the “long rains” not having arrived this year) and with the “short rains” due in October, as soon as the funds came in, we embarked on water catchment and storage projects.
Last week we were thrilled to have completed lining our three large water pans (rainwater catchment dams), giving us 1 million litres of water storage. We have also covered the water pans with a 90% shade net covering to protect against evaporation and children or animals falling in. Hopefully it will rain soon, as elephants and wildlife, farmers and families are all quite desperate right now.
In one day of heavy rain, our water pans will be full and provide enough water for our farm for a year. When our new curved brick making machine arrives it will enable us to build new water storage tanks from earthen bricks. Most families in the region have limited access to water catchment and storage and providing tanks will be life changing for them.
